When people think of frogs, they usually picture small green animals near ponds or hear croaking during monsoon evenings. But the frog world is far stranger than that. Some frogs spend most of their lives underground. Some look like moss-covered stones. Others have survival methods so unusual they almost sound made up.
Across different parts of the world, evolution has shaped frogs into creatures that seem more bizarre than familiar. Here are five unusual frogs you may have never heard of.

The purple frog looks very different from the frogs most people are familiar with. With its rounded body and pointed snout, it has an unusual appearance that makes it stand out from other amphibians.
What makes it even more interesting is its lifestyle. The purple frog spends most of its life underground and comes out mainly during the breeding season.

Glass frogs are known for something few animals have – partially transparent skin. In some species, the underside is so clear that internal organs can be seen.
Their unusual appearance is balanced by impressive camouflage. Resting on green leaves above streams, they blend into their surroundings and become difficult for predators to spot. Their near-transparent bodies have made them one of the most talked-about unusual frogs.

At first glance, this frog often looks more like a damp piece of moss or rock than a living animal.
Its textured skin and dark green colouring help it merge almost perfectly with forest environments. When threatened, it can remain completely still, making it even harder to notice. The camouflage is so effective that spotting one in the wild can be difficult.

The Surinam toad is considered one of the most unusual amphibians because of its distinctive reproductive process. Unlike many frogs, the young develop in small pockets on the female’s back before emerging later.
Its flattened body and uncommon appearance make it stand out, adding to its reputation as one of the more bizarre frogs found in nature.

Despite its name, the hairy frog is not actually covered in hair. Male frogs develop hair-like structures during certain periods, giving the species its unusual name.
It is also known for an uncommon defence mechanism, which has made it one of the more unusual frogs in the animal world. Because of this trait, some people refer to it as the “wolverine frog.”
