I don’t want to get typecast and only do specific types of roles, says Ramya

After debuting with Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam (NEEK) last year, Ramya Ranganathan is quickly building a promising lineup. The actress will next feature in Hiphop Tamizha Adhi’s Meesaya Murukku 2 and Jama fame Pari Elavazhagan’s Anbe Diana. Excerpts from a conversation:

‘I'm a big fan of Meesaya Murukku. I cried when Vaadi Pulla Vaadi played on screen’Recalling how she came on board for Messaya Murukku 2, the actress reveals, “I'm a big fan of Meesaya Murukku. I cried when Vaadi Pulla Vaadi played on screen. There was a lot of excitement to be part of the sequel, and when I got the call from Hiphop Tamizha’s office, I wanted to jump out of excitement.” About working with Adhi, she says, “It was amazing working with Adhi sir. I was starstruck when I met him for the first time. And that continued throughout the shoot. I had to take time to forget that he is a huge star and slowly come to terms with the fact that he is my co-actor. He is humble, down-to-earth and hard-working."




‘I’m looking for films that add more value to me as an artiste’Ramya is conscious of taking up roles that do not typecast her. In Meesaya Murukku 2, she plays a rooted Tamil girl, while in Anbe Diana, she plays an Anglo-Indian. She says, "Both roles are completely different from each other and my NEEK character. It was a conscious decision to choose them, as I get to show my versatility. I don't want to get typecast and only do specific types of roles. I’m looking for films that add more value to me as an artiste."

“Pari sir is extremely talented. He has played with different cultures, geographies and dialects in Anbe Diana. I also interacted with Anglo-Indians from Perambur during the shoot and observed their body language. Even though I'm from Chennai, I had not explored Perambur, and it almost felt like a completely different city altogether."

‘I don't mind being one of the female leads or the only female lead’The actress is clear about her priorities and isn't hesitant when it comes to sharing screen space with other actresses. “I don't mind being one of the female leads or the only female lead. I don't look at scripts that way, as long as my characters are well-written, are presented well and add significance to the film. I just look at how the film as a whole is presented. If a film can bring the best out of me, I go ahead and do it. I don't stick to a method,” she opines.
