About the Movie

The friendship of four wayward teens and their changing understanding of the world is the crux of the story. It would have worked better if it wasn’t for random characters getting undeserving footage.

Youngraad Movie Review {3/5}: Critic Review of Youngraad by Times of India

Story: Set in Nashik, the film follows the tumultuous journey of four friends, who refuse to take life seriously until it takes an ugly turn, forcing them to redefine and realign their choices. Review: Phantom films’ foray into Marathi cinema shares their penchant for telling realistic human stories amidst the backdrop of small towns, crime and politics. Director Makrand Mane portrays the psyche of his characters well. They are foolhardy and their transition to thinking adults is an ugly reminder of what life and growing up does to an individual. However, barring an edgy, unpredictable and suspenseful second half, Mane wastes too much time in the inconsequential build up. Told from the point of view of its protagonist Vikas (Chaitanya), the first half is muddled with a Raanjhanaa like stalkerish love story which goes nowhere. It has no impact on what follows and the local political angle is stretched way too much. The supporting characters seem more interesting than the lead ones and that’s a major drawback. The friendship of four wayward teens and their changing understanding of the world is the crux of the story. It would have worked better if it wasn’t for random characters getting undeserving footage. The shifting focus in intent of making this film and staying true to its story, makes Youngraad, an otherwise compelling film, a sluggish watch. The film ends with a cathartic father son conversation and the realisation of how life does not and will not pan out the way you’d imagined it to. You wish the execution was as impactful as the message.
