Sanju Samson brought plenty of laughter to the promotional event of 'Athiradi' in Chennai when he revealed why he declined an opportunity to appear in the film. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter attended the launch of the Tamil trailer for the
Basil Joseph starrer and entertained the audience with a witty explanation for his decision. As reported by Cinema Express, Sanju said he was approached for a brief appearance in the Malayalam entertainer. However, he jokingly turned down the offer because the role did not offer enough screen time. “They approached me for a small role in the film, but I told them that if I ever act, it should be a slightly bigger role,” he said.
Basil Joseph’s playful disclosure
At the event, Basil Joseph shared how the team had hoped to bring Sanju on board for a cameo. With his trademark sense of humour, Basil said, “We had called Sanju for a cameo role in this film. But he rejected it immediately.” Sanju also spoke about his long-standing friendship with Basil. He said they have known each other for many years and have developed a strong mutual understanding. “Basil is a friend whom I have known for several years. When we spend time, he is getting to know how I am as a cricketer, and I am getting to know how he is as a movie star,” he said.
The cricketer described Basil as cheerful and approachable. At the same time, he emphasized the filmmaker’s intense professionalism. “Basil is always casual. He is loved by everyone and is always cheerful, but he is a very serious guy when it comes to his profession. When it comes to work, he becomes very strict.”
Basil Joseph's discipline impresses Sanju Samson
Sanju offered a humorous example to show how organized Basil is. “When I finish a tour and come here and invite him for dinner, he will say, ‘You are saying now. You should have told me one week ago. We plan my whole week accordingly.’” He said this level of planning reflects Basil’s commitment to his craft. “I know the amount of effort he must have put in. I know that if he commits to something, it will be 100 per cent from his heart. I know the quality will be there. When quality is there, people will love it, and that is why I am here supporting it.”
'Athiradi' wins audience appreciation
Sanju said he intends to watch Athiradi in both Malayalam and Tamil. He also joked, “After every game, Basil calls me and tells me, ‘You shouldn’t have played this shot,’ or you should have played this one. Likewise, I too will watch the film and tell him, ‘This scene isn’t working’.” When asked whether he would be critical, Sanju replied, “I will call him and give him motivation. I won’t say negative things. After all, he is a friend.”
Meanwhile, 'Athiradi' continues to attract audiences in theatres.
As ETimes noted, "What makes Athiradi work is its energy, humour, emotional connect, and unapologetic entertainment value. At the same time, the film does have its limitations. Athiradi heavily revolves around male friendships and male emotions, leaving actresses like Zarin Shihab and
Riya Shibu with very little to do beyond supporting the heroes. Stronger female characters and more emotional layering could have elevated the film further. Still, despite its familiar setup, Athiradi turns out to be one of the most enjoyable entertainers in recent times—a colourful, laughter-filled celebration of youth, friendship, dreams, and second chances." Meanwhile, Basil Joseph was last seen in 'Parasakthi'.
