This is a serious violation of privacy: Rukmini Vasanth on deepfake

Artificial Intelligence has claimed another celebrity victim. Kantara Chapter 1 actor Rukmini Vasanth became the latest target of a deepfake scam af ter digitally altered images of her allegedly posing in a green bikini began circulating widely on social media.

While some fans initially believed the images were from a genuine photoshoot, several users quickly pointed out inconsistencies suggesting the visuals were AI-generated. Following the circulation of the images, Rukmini’s team reportedly initiated legal action to identify those responsible and pursue action against them.
The incident echoes the 2023 deepfake controversy involving actor Rashmika Mandanna, whose manipulated video had sparked widespread concern and led to the arrest of the accused in Andhra Pradesh.





The cyber ecosystem needs stronger laws: Police
“There is no specific anti-deepfake legislation in India at present. However, the growing impact of social media on the social fabric cannot be ignored. Deepfakes are often created with malicious intent and may violate an individual’s right to privacy, which forms an integral part of the right to life and personal liberty under Article 21 of the Constitution of India. While constitutional protections exist for harms caused in the physical world, the rapidly evolving cyber ecosystem highlights an urgent need for robust cyber governance laws in India. Legal recourse can, however, be sought in IT Act 66D/66E/67, BNS 356 and IT Rules 2026,” says Hemant Nimbalkar, ADGP, Commissioner, Information & Public Relations of Karnataka.


How to spot deepfake images
n Anatomical glitches: Distorted fingers, extra teeth, uneven facial symmetry, or unnatural eye positioning
n Lighting inconsistencies: Odd shadows, mismatched light sources, or unnatural reflections in the eyes and surrounding surfaces
n Blending errors: Blurry or overly sharp edges around the face, hairline, or skin where edits may have been made
n Accessory distortions: Warped glasses, asymmetrical earrings, or hair that unnaturally merges with the background
n Metadata irregularities: File data may reveal editing inconsistencies or traces of AI
