Sonu Nigam is the best singer: Rupam

Itis purely a coincidence. I am sure the Awards were decided earlier. However, ifpeople want to conclude that my son is my lucky charm, I have no objections tothat.It is a rumour. Till now, I didn’t need towrite my son’s name or religion in any form. I had to fill out quite a fewforms in the last couple of days and in the nursing home form, where I had tomention the religion of the mother, I wrote ‘Hinduism’ and in thebirth cirtificate, where I had to write the religion of the father, I wrote‘Atheist’. As far as Rup Aarohan Prometheus’ religion isconcerned, it is entirely up to him to decide when he grows up.I have been composing music for myband as well as my solo projects for a long time. I had got a few offers to domusic for films earlier, but I needed a like-minded director and a script that Icould relate with. That is what I got from “Mahanagar@Kolkata”. Itwas definitely a well-thought out decision and I have gained a tremendous amountof experience from it. In future, to accept any music direction offer for films,I’ll put these experiences to use. It was also Sumanda’s(Mukhopadhyay) idea to use my voice for the playback. I could have just composedthe music, but Sumanda categorically wanted to make the most of my voice aswell. I am thankful tohim.The award that I’ve got is for the BestMale Playback Singer, but I am sure that the earlier songs that I’ve sungare equally easy on the ears.Ihope so. It is a national recognition and I hope new avenues openup.I have never been more surprisedinlife.None of my solo projects have the Fossils sound. Itis not a question of breaking away from the mould, but I would say the sound ofRupam and Fossils are two branches of the same tree, which look and feeldifferent in many ways but are similar in some. Currently, I am working on mynext solo album and the sound again ispath-breaking.I never dreamtof getting this Award... It never crossed my mind. The biggest dream would be toget a National Award for BestLyricist.I am rather hard-pressed for time with my solo album asa lot of time needs to be devoted to it. Work, for me, is the best celebration.It’s too early for me to answer this question. Meanwhile, I have received congratulatory messages from Gabu, Subhajit, Upalda, Anindyada, Debajyoti Mishra, Rupankar, Pota, Prabuddhada, Pinky, Indra (who assisted me in this project), my bandmates, Srikanto Acharya, Bonnie Chakraborty and Nilanjan Nandy. Allan and Neel Adhikari were with me when I got the news and they were the first ones to congratulate me.
