ARMED WITH FINE ACTING

Aiyaary Story: An Indian Army officer is compelled to chase down his protege when the latter turns rogue and threatens to disrupt the country’s government and army.

Aiyaary Review: ‘Aiyaary’ has all the makings of a Neeraj Pandey thriller. The honest and dutiful officer Colonel Abhay Singh (Manoj Bajpayee) leads covert operations with a select group of officers. Things go awry for him and his team when Sidharth Malhotra’s Jai Bakshi – the brightest of the lot – goes rogue. Abhay Singh has to track him down while defending everything he believes in.

Neeraj Pandey’s movies are known for strong character actors, and this one’s no different. To no one’s surprise, the always reliable Manoj Bajpayee gives another compelling turn as a steadfast officer bound by duty. He is the backbone of the film and is believable as a man capable of going to great lengths to complete the task at hand. Although his intent to take down his own protege is clear, his conundrum while chasing Jai Bakshi is palpable.

Speaking of which, Sidharth Malhotra is at home playing an officer who becomes disillusioned by the system he has sworn to uphold. He brings a methodical, calm and collected demeanor to Jai Bakshi, and is suitably convincing as a soldier whose skills put him one step ahead of his superiors. Rakul Preet Singh brings a lot of charm to her role but merely ends up being Jai’s love interest. Thankfully, not much time is wasted on their romance. Pooja Chopra starts off with a hint of potential but her character Maya only gets to play a loyalist to Abhay Singh. Among the Neeraj Pandey favorites – Anupam Kher as Tariq Ali feels underutilized. Although Naseeruddin Shah’s Baburao is locked away for most of the film, he becomes relevant at a crucial point, where the thespian more than makes up for his absence. Unfortunately, it comes a little too late in the film.

‘Aiyaary’ has quite a few lethargic scenes that are long-drawn and don’t do much to further the story or add to the characters. The complexity of the overarching plot allows for some exposition, but the screenplay goes overboard and often loses pace. The film could make a far more intriguing watch with a tighter edit devoid of all the dramatized entries and exits. Those expecting the clever Neeraj Pandey twists will be left wanting more. But ‘Aiyaary’ has measured performances that resound louder than its bombastic score, and they alone make it a worthwhile watch.

The movie then takes us to Egypt, where Abhay is on a special mission on behalf of the Indian Army. He and his colleagues are keeping track of a man, who is a threat to the country, as they identify the person Abhay’s colleague forgets to bring the ammunition bag through which they are unable to shoot the person. Abhay decides to follow him, and after a while, he catches up to him and shoots him. Jai Bakshi is part of a Military Covert Agency Unit. His job is surveillance and a classified special operations unit DSD (Data Systems Diagnostics). One day while conducting an inspection, Jai overhears a representative of Indian Arms lobby Retired Lt.Gen Gurinder Singh (Played by Kumud Mishra), attempting to bribe the Army chief Pratap Malik (played by Vikram Gokhale), on behalf of a Czech firm with a USD 2.5 million offer. Pratap flatly refuses the offer and warns him and says that you can bribe the other person who will sit in this seat post my retirement. This angers Gurinder, who in turn threatens to expose that DSD exists, to the Public. While listening to the surveillance, Jai finds out about a major scam involving the Indian Army.

Meanwhile, Abhay lands in India and meets his wife while going home through the airport, his driver realises that a car is following him. Next morning Abhay receives a call from Maya (Played by Pooja Chopra) who is a member of Abhay’s team and informs him that Jai is missing since three days and they aren’t able to track him down. Abhay comes to the office and Maya informs him that Jai has stolen a highly secretive data from DSD office. After which he has vanished and is a different number. After knowing this, Abhay decides to shift his office to an undisclosed place.Meanwhile, Jai checks in to a hotel and makes a call to Baburao Shastri (played by Naseeruddin Shah) and informs him not to pick up any call. Sonia was called in for an interview to provide IT Solutions, where Jai lied about his name being Abhimanyu Singh and that his company is running a data management company and wants an IT person who can provide him IT network securities and solutions.Sonia finds out that Abhay was lying about his name and the company. Somehow they fall in love. Abhay gives all the information about his mission and him going rogue against the government to Sonia. He convinces her to help her with his plan.Meanwhile, Gurinder Singh meets an influential news reporter Kamya (Played by Nivedita Bhattacharya) where he provides her with sensitive information, exposing Army's secrets and asks her to run a campaign against the current Army Chief to defame him in public, along with giving good publicity to the next Army Chief.

Because of his sources, Abhay comes to know about Jai 's plan of leaving along with Sonia. But Sonia leaves for London alone, yet Abhay keeps on his efforts to track Jai. Meanwhile, Jai renegotiates the deal with Gurinder because he had no idea that Gurinder is bribing 2.5 million to the Army Chief on the name of funds, so he demands 10 crores for the deal, and Gurinder contacts Gen. Malik for money. This makes Gurinder furious.

A corrupt Army Officer Brig. K Srinivas (played by Rajesh Tailang), spies on Abhay and keeps track of his activities and informs Gurinder. As Gurinder approves to the deal and transfers the money to the bank account which is based in London and its opened by Sonia.
Jai shares a preview of his information about Gurinder and shares the information with the news reporter.

Meanwhile, Gen. Malik personally meets Abhay and informs about the termination of DSD, and any Foreign involvement in Indian Defence Deals and Lt.Gen Gurinder Singh's involvement with an influential London based Arms dealer Mukesh Kapoor (Played by Adil Hussain), who's the primary culprit behind all the corruption. General Malik further informs Abhay that once the information about DSD goes public, Abhay will be declared a traitor and thrown out of the Army, along with his team.

Abhay, however, remains unworried and promises Gen. Malik, that he will expose the wrongdoings and punish all those involved in the scam to protect the integrity of Indian Army. Post the meeting, Srinivas keeps a tab on Abhay, while Abhay heads to the DSD office, he informs his team that they have been disowned by Government, denying their existence. Abhay and Maya alert all their sources and order them to keep a low profile, to avoid detection.

Meanwhile, Jai calls Abhay, and they end up having a war of words, with Jai warning Abhay to leave everything and run, while Abhay labels Jai a coward and a traitor.

Jai knows that he is being followed by Abhay, so he disguises himself and leaves for London, Abhay and Jay travel on the same plane, while DSD members stay back in India.

At that exact moment, Brig. Srinivas makes his move but fails to capture Abhay. In London, Jai calls Gurinder, revealing that he has bugged Gurinder's house and asks him to do proper research before making any deals. Gurinder agrees and transfers the money to Jai 's account.

Meanwhile, Abhay has also reached London and contacts a London-based immigrant Tariq Bhai (Played by Anupam Kher), who is known to be a middle-man for Intelligence agents. Tariq Bhai and Abhay attempt to locate Jai and Sonia but fail. However, Jai contacts them and warns them to back off, but Abhay refuses and instead vows to hunt him down.

Abhay gets confused about how Jay is two steps ahead of him.

Finally, out of desperation, Abhay contacts Mukesh Kapoor and fixes a meeting with him. At the same time, Jai also sets a meeting with a few MI-6 Officers. Abhay reveals to Mukesh that Jai possesses some sensitive incriminating data, which can severely affect his business and therefore asks Mukesh to eliminate Jai. Mukesh, however, is suspicious of Abhay but is forced to accept the offer, when Abhay reveals his knowledge of Mukesh's identity as that of an ex Indian Army Colonel and the capture of Gurinder Singh by DSD team in India.

However, Abhay double crosses Mukesh by informing Sonia about the threat to Jai 's life and orders her to lure Jai to an undisclosed location. Jai 's meeting ends up in a shootout with 2 agents getting killed and him getting wounded. Jai, however, makes it to the place, where Abhay has called him to meet, the site was suggested by Tariq Bhai.

Abhay, on seeing Jai, severely beats him up and treats him as a traitor. However, Jai justifies his actions and accuses the Indian system of corruption and eliminating those who raise a voice against corruption. Abhay mocks Jai 's justification, by calling it a lame excuse and insults his generation, but Jai counters this by stating that it was the older generation who was responsible for the massive corruption in India. Jai further questions the legacy that the older generation plans to leave for the youth, thus forcing Abhay to agree with him.

Meanwhile, Mukesh gets angry at being fooled, takes Tariq Bhai hostage and plans to execute him, but is forced to stop when Jai informs him that he will surrender all the sensitive information regarding Mukesh Kapoor's deals and requests for a personal meeting. Mukesh, realising that Abhay still has Gurinder Singh, reluctantly agrees.
Jai informs Abhay about a significant Army housing scam in Mumbai, involving Gurinder Singh and the Defence Minister. He further tells that the only eyewitness to the entire fraud, a watchman named Baburao Shastri (Naseeruddin Shah) is being hidden for 3 weeks by Jai in a small hotel in Paharganj, Delhi.

Abhay immediately heads back to India and meets Baburao, who tells him about a major scam and how he because of a dog he gets to know about the fraud which is led by Gurinder Singh.

He also informs about the irregularities in an Army housing project in Colaba, Mumbai and the involvement of several senior bureaucrats and Army Officers lead by Gurinder Singh.

Abhay records Baburao's confessions and gives them to the same influential journalist who earlier had met Gurinder Singh. The journalist is revealed to be Abhay Singh's ex-girlfriend, who tells him that she plans to run Gurinder's story tomorrow. Abhay gives her Baburao's confession and requests her to listen to both the stories and run the story which she finds fit. The journalist listens to both the stories and decides to run Abhay's account, thus choosing to expose the Army's housing scam.

Meanwhile, Brig. Srinivas finally captures all the DSD members and frees Gurinder Singh. Srinivas interrogates Maya were he confesses, Baburao’s story and which makes Srinivas angry, as he is also a part of the scam. Also, DSD is let free from the charges and Army's Housing scam gets exposed. Gurinder Singh, overcome with shame and guilt, shoots himself dead.

In the ending scene, Jai walks towards the building of Mukesh Kapoor and recollects that moment of flipping the coin while taking a decision and Jai flips a coin and vanishes. After two months Jai pays a visit to Abhay and Abhay is shown performing his duties, as usual, they both make eye contact, and Jai smiles.
