7 Bollywood films we wish had a different ending

As Indians, we love happy endings in films. How many times have we come out of a cinema hall wondering and wishing the ending to be different? After sitting through almost three hours, sometimes there is such feeling. We look at seven Bollywood films we wish had a different ending.

Goliyon Ki Rasleela...Ram-Leela: Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela...Ram-Leela' seemed to be inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Featuring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, the film is a story of two warring families and how their children (Ram and Leela) fall in love with each other, only to turn enemies due to some misunderstandings. Towards the end of the film, when all seems well and the two families embrace, Ram and Leela decide to die at the hands of each other as they are lovers and prefer this death than to be killed by their families. In a tragic end, the two eventually shoot each other and die when they could have easily lived and the film could have had a happy ending. Seems a bit clichéd and the two not dying would have been a different twist to the age-old tale.

Aashiqui 2: This was one of the biggest blockbusters of 2013. Starring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur, 'Aashiqui 2' is the turbulent story of Rahul (Aditya) and Arohi (Shraddha). Directed by Mohit Suri, this film is a sequel to the 1990 film Aashiqui. Here, both Rahul and Arohi are madly in love with each other and are singers by profession. Eventually, Arohi becomes more popular but because of her love for Rahul, she is ready to sacrifice her career so she can look after him. Rahul is an alcoholic and this comes in the way of his work. Eventually, he commits suicide as he doesn't want to be a burden on Arohi, who plans to quit her musical journey. The ending was a bummer and we wished that Rahul rehabilitated himself instead of taking the suicide route. The film would have been just perfect, had Arohi and Aditya started afresh on a clean note, both pursuing their passion for singing and eventually marrying.

Kai Po Che: Based on Chetan Bhagat's The 3 Mistakes of My Life, 'Kai Po Che' marked the Bollywood debut of TV actor Sushant Singh Rajput. A story of three friends whose fates are entwined, this one really cut through the heart. In the end, when Sushant's character Ishaan is shot by his friend Omkar (Amit Sadh) in the backdrop of the Godhra Riots, we wish the ending was different. Instead of Ishaan dying, maybe they could have shown Omkar helping him save Ali and nurture him to be a cricketer. The movie depicted love, betrayal, angst, friendship and a myriad of emotions, but when Ishaan is killed, it brought the mood down. A Bollywood film, no matter how serious the theme, is always expected to be happy or at least audiences want that. Sushant's character was slightly selfish but also selfless in helping Ali be the great cricketer he eventually becomes. Hence killing him was least expected.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam: Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ambitious project 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' was a box-office hit and Aishwarya's onscreen chemistry with both Salman and Ajay Devgn did wonders for cine goers. It was the first time that the three were sharing screen space together. Revolving around the love story of Sameer (Salman Khan) and Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), the film connected well with masses. Even Ajay Devgn was much loved in the film. His character Vanraj ends up marrying Nandini and on their honeymoon, they go to find her lover Sameer in Italy. In the end, when Vanraj is about to unite Nandini and Sameer, she has a change of heart and decides to stay with Vanraj instead of running away with her lover. People loved Nandini and Sameer's character and chemistry so much that they wished the ending was different, that Vanraj should have reunited Nandini and Sameer and perhaps married someone else.

New York: Katrina Kaif, John Abraham and Neil Nitin Mukesh did a brilliant job in this Kabir Khan directorial. In a tale of terrorism, Omar (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is forced to frame his college friend Samir (John Abraham) who is a suspected terrorist. Samir is also married to Maya (Katrina Kaif) and the two have a son together. Omar is wrongly framed by cops in 'New York' and in order to save himself, he must spill the beans about Samir. Eventually, Samir is killed and even Maya dies. Omar then ends up taking care of their son. While the whole movie took us on an emotional ride, we just wish the end was different. Even though Samir would have landed himself in, the end result would have been disastrous either way. But to see him and Maya die was saddening and an ending we wish could have been avoided.

Paan Singh Tomar: Irrfan Khan in any role is convincing and 'Paan Singh Tomar' is one of his films we simply loved. Irrfan plays the onscreen character of a real life soldier, Paan Singh Tomar who later turns into an athlete and then eventually into a dacoit. This biopic narrates the beautiful tale of man who joins sports out of love for food and its unlimited supply, not knowing he is going to represent India, even going on to win medals. But fate has cruel plans in store for him as he is forced to turn into a dacoit. In the end, he and his gang members are killed by the cops. In spite of playing the reel life dacoit, we wished the ending was different and Paan Singh Tomar was never killed. Although he was a dacoit, the conditions under which he became one make our hearts cry, especially when he is shot down in the climax scene. Somehow, he should have turned himself over and lived to tell another tale.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu: Shakun Batra's debut film featured Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan in lead roles. A tale of opposites who come together, 'Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu' is a cute film until it reaches the end. Kareena and Imran's chemistry works wonders on the silver screen but Imran's one-sided attraction for Bebo in the film kind of ruins it. Just when we are hoping for her to reciprocate, she turns around and is angry with Imran Khan for even thinking like that. Now what is the poor lad supposed to do? He's had a disastrous date with a girl (played by Soniya Mehra) and is trying to work on his low self-esteem due to his unemployment and over-bearing father. In the end, Imran and Kareena's onscreen characters decide to remain friends and Rahul (Imran) is still hopeful that Riana (Kareena) will return to him. We just wish Bebo had said yes!
