'You were almost impossible to follow': Vir Das mourns the demise of comedian Raj Sharma at 50

Acclaimed Dallas-based stand-up comedian Raj Sharma passed away on Friday morning at the age of 50, leaving behind a deep void in the comedy world. Among the first to pay tribute was comedian-actor Vir Das, who shared a heartfelt message crediting Sharma as a pivotal figure in his early career in the United States.Taking to Instagram on Saturday, Vir Das shared a series of slides alongside a deeply personal tribute, recalling how Sharma helped launch his career in America when he was still finding his footing.He wrote, "Rest in Peace Raj Sharma. Raj Sharma got me my first ever spot at the Laugh Factory. Convinced me I was good enough to compete in the American market. Gave me great advice, made me laugh HARD. He was a beast of a comedian. Crowd work that I still think is almost unparalleled."Vir also reflected on how he tried to return the favour in later years, adding, "I'd always wanted to return the favour so he was the first person I programmed in the Weirdass Pajama festival and on Jestination Unknown. This profession of ours can harden people, and its a lonely one. Raj was always happy for someone who killed, brutal with someone who bombed. He certainly saw me do both, as i did him."He concluded with a final, moving tribute: "You were a good friend and a big heart. As a comedian, I leave you with the ultimate comics compliment, you were almost impossible to follow. Rest in peace brother."Raj Sharma's passing has been widely mourned across the comedy community, with peers remembering him not only for his exceptional talent but also for his generosity toward fellow performers. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he had built a strong reputation as a respected headliner at comedy clubs across Texas and beyond, sharing stages with names such as Sebastian Maniscalco, Russell Peters, Sheryl Underwood, and Godfrey.In later years, Sharma expanded his reach to California, becoming a regular at the iconic Laugh Factory, and performed internationally across Europe and Australia.In recent months, Sharma had returned to North Texas while dealing with a series of serious health issues that frequently required hospitalization. He had spoken candidly on social media, where he had over 450,000 Instagram followers, about his condition, including facial paralysis with drooping on the left side of his face, facial cellulitis, persistent nasal problems, and episodes of extreme fatigue.Despite these challenges, Sharma never stopped performing. He hosted a "Raj Sharma & Friends" show at the Addison Improv as recently as March 18, just weeks before his death. In October, the same venue had celebrated his milestone 50th birthday with a special show.
