When Shah Rukh Khan said he regretted playing Aishwarya Rai's twin sibling in ‘Josh’

Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are celebrated as one of Indian cinema’s most iconic on-screen couples. Their fiery chemistry in 'Devdas' is still etched in fans' memories. But before they became a definitive romantic pair, the two superstars played roles that Shah Rukh Khan later hilariously regretted: twin siblings.

A surprising sibling role in 'Josh'

In the 2000 hit film 'Josh', SRK and Aishwarya were cast as Max and Shirley, a pair of inseparable twins in a small Goan town. While their brother-sister bond was a highlight of the movie, the casting was unconventional. It put two of the industry's most charismatic and good-looking actors in a completely platonic, familial relationship.




Though they looked adorable together as siblings, fans had to wait for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 'Devdas' (2002) to see them ignite the screen as lovers. The casting in 'Josh' remains a unique and memorable part of their shared filmography.

Shah Rukh Khan’s witty confession

Years later, in a widely circulated video from an old award function, SRK shared the stage with Aishwarya and made a witty confession. He joked that his one big regret was that in his first major film with the "world's most beautiful woman," he was cast as her brother.

He added that, to make it worse, people would often tell him that they looked alike, as twins often do. SRK then delivered the punchline with his signature charm. He said he eventually made peace with the fact. His logic: if Aishwarya is the most beautiful woman in the world, and he was cast as her twin, then he must be just as good-looking.

The two have also shared screen in ‘Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam’ and ‘Mohobbatein’. The last time they were seen together was in the 2016 film 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'. In a fitting progression from their first roles, Aishwarya had a key role as a poet, while Shah Rukh had a powerful guest appearance as her ex-husband.
