Sohum Shah: 'I wanted to be like Shah Rukh Khan. But when Tumbbad tanked at the box office, my heart broke'
Sohum Shah, who received immense appreciation from the audience for his role in the film ‘Tumbbad’, recently revealed that he got depressed after the failure of ‘Tumbbad’ at the box office. The actor also expressed his desire to become like Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
During a conversation with Humans of Bombay, Sohum Shah shared, “I wanted to be like SRK. But when Tumbbad tanked at the box office, my heart broke. I called my brother & said, ‘I have failed.’ But that didn’t deter my passion. I worked hard & gave it my all. Slowly, I started getting recognition. And maybe luck was on my side…today, Tumbbad is re-releasing in theatres. People tell me, “It’s finally getting the love it deserves.” Toh yar…failure toh nahi hu. Picture toh baki hai mere dost…”
Recently, Sohum officially announced ‘Tumbbad 2’ after the successful re-release of ‘Tumbbad’ in theatres after six years. The actor took to his Instagram on Saturday and made the announcement with a video teaser. The short clip features characters Vinayak and his son Pandurang, with a narration from Sohum Shah saying, "Samay ka pahiya gol hai, jo beet gaya woh fir laut ke aayega...darwaaza bhi ek baar phir khulega." The teaser concludes with the ominous words, "Pralay, Pralay phir aayega." It hints at a darker and larger-scale sequel.
After being re-released, ‘Tumbbad’ broke all previous box office records, even outperforming classic movies like ‘Sholay’, ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, and ‘Rockstar’ in terms of opening day collections.
Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and produced by Sohum Shah, Aanand L. Rai, Mukesh Shah and Amita Shah, the horror drama received praise from the critics when it was released in theatres on October 12, 2018. It starred Sohum Shah, Dhundiraj Prabhakar Jogalekar, Harsh K and Jyoti Malshe in the pivotal roles.
