Independence Day: 'Mission Mangal' to 'Batla House', Bollywood movies released on August 15 over the years

Bollywood filmmakers often look for the festive weekend to ensure good business for their films. Be it Diwali, Christmas or National holidays, to mint more at the box office, films are released during holidays. Last year on 15th August, Akshay Kumar's Misson Mangal' and John Abraham's 'Batla House' hit the big screen. This Independence Day lets take a look at some of the movies that were released around Independence week over the years.

Rustom

'Rustom' stars Akshay Kumar, Ileana D'Cruz, Arjan Bajwa and Esha Gupta in pivotal roles. It is about the story of a naval officer whose wife has an extramarital affair with a businessman. Akshay received the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance as Rustom Pavri. The movie opened well at the box office and did better than other films released during that period. Released during the Independence day weekend, boxofficeindia.com reported that the film minted Rs. 13,92,00,000 on its first day.

Mission Mangal

Along with Batla House, 'Misson Mangal' hit the big screen on last year's Independence Day. The film starred Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari, Sharman Joshi, H. G. Dattatreya and Vikram Gokhale in pivotal roles. The movie is based on the life of scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation who contributed to the Mars Orbiter Mission, India's first interplanetary expedition. According to the boxofficeindia.com report, the film made Rs. 28,45,00,000 on its first day.

Gold

'Gold' is based on the journey of India's first national hockey team to the 1948 Summer Olympics. It stars Akshay Kumar as Tapan Das, the man who won India its first gold medal in the 1948 Summer Olympics. It also starred Amit Sadh, Vineet Kumar Singh, Kunal Kapoor, Sunny Kaushal and Nikita Dutta feature in supporting roles. The movie theatrically released in India on 15 August 2018, India's Independence Day. It received generally positive reviews

Ek Tha Tiger

Helmed by Kabir Khan, the film starred Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, and features Ranvir Shorey, Girish Karnad, Roshan Seth, and Gavie Chahal in pivotal roles. The film is about an Indian spy tasked with recovering information before it is gained by Pakistan. The spy falls in love with a Pakistani agent during the mission. The film did well at the box office and its Independence Day release helped the makers to mint more money. According to the boxofficeindia.com report, the film made Rs. 30,61,00,000 on its first day.

Batla House

Helmed by Nikkhil Advani, the film is inspired by the 2008 Batla House encounter case that took place on 19 September 2008. The movie stars John Abraham in the lead role. He played the role of Sanjay Kumar, is inspired by Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, the police officer who played a crucial role in the encounter. The film showcases the encounter and in its aftermath, Sanjay's struggle to catch the fugitives and prove the encounter wasn't a fake one. Released on 15th August 2019, the film made Rs. 14,81,00,000 on its first day, according to boxofficeindia.com.
