Tusshar Kapoor and Johny Lal
Cinematographer Johny Lal passed away on April 21 due to COVID-19 in Mumbai. Tusshar Kapoor, who worked with Lal in his debut film
Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai
(2001), expressed sadness over the loss of a talented cinematographer. In an exclusive chat with BT, Tusshar recalled, "Johny
ji
did the cinematography for my first film
Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai,
so he will always be special for me. He came like a breath of fresh air and contributed a lot in making the film look youthful. I could not have asked for a better debut with him making us all look so refreshing and youthful in the film." He added, "I remember how our director Satish Kaushik and producer Vashu Bhagnani wanted to move fast and not delay the process, while we wanted more time for rehearsals. And even though the shooting happened at a high speed, he gave the best lighting and made the film look so fresh. He made New Zealand look so pretty in the film."In addition to
Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai
, Tusshar also had the experience of working with him on a few schedules of
Kucch To Hai
(2003). He said, "The film got delayed, but he was a large part of the film and made the film look extremely colourful and young. His work as a cinematographer stands out in Bollywood. Though I was a newcomer, he was gentle, encouraging and always positive towards me." Reflecting on the grim situation surrounding us due to the pandemic, he added, "We are in terrible times right now and the news of Lal's demise came as a shock to me. I pray that his soul finds peace, because he spread a lot of happiness when he was alive. Johny
bhai
, rest in peace, you will be truly missed."
