Bipasha Basu wants to dub her own lines inRituparno Ghoshs Shob Charitro Kalponik, but shes furious because, she says, her producers will not let her. Says Bipasha, One of thereasons why I waited so long to do a Bengali film was because I wanted to besure I could carry off the lines. After much sparring, the producersrelented partially.
Says Bipasha, Now they want me to dub onlyfor the print that would be submitted for the National Awards (films with theactors lines dubbed by a dubbing artiste are not eligible). But I willnot let the film be released with someone elses voice in it. I know whatthat does to a performance. My audiences cant be conned by anothervoice. Bipasha has heard the voice used to dub for her. She says,The voice they plan to use is simply terrible! When I signed the film itwas made clear that it would be shot in Kolkata but dubbed in Mumbai. Rituparnois supposed to come and supervise my dubbing in Mumbai.
Who doesshe blame? Bipasha replies, Its not Rituparno. Its theproduction guys.
Rituparno makes supportive noises fromVaranasi where hes shooting, saying, If the artiste is willing andcapable, theres no reason why she shouldnt be allowed to dub herown lines.
When we contacted Mahesh Ramanathan, COO of theproduction house, he said, This is a very sensitive subject. RituparnoGhosh would be the best person to answer why Bipasha hasnt dubbed her ownlines. Think about it, on our part, why would we not want Bipasha to dub? Hervoice would only enhance the films equity.
We readbetween the lines. And gathered that perhaps Bips is barking up the wrong tree, with misplaced anger.
