Aamir Khan recalls buying jeans from strangers to get Munna’s look right in Rangeela: ‘I would stop my car and ask to buy’
‘Rangeela’, which hit theaters on September 8, 1995, starring Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, and Jackie Shroff, marks its 30th anniversary. Reflecting on the film, Aamir Khan candidly discusses the process behind it and how his bond with director Ram Gopal Varma has changed over time.
Understanding the character through narration
In an interview with News18, Aamir said that he understood the key to the character from Ramu during his first narration. During that first narration, he watched Ramu closely and noted that he was doing it very well. Although Ramu does not speak Hindi and was narrating in English, he conveyed the attitude and body language effectively. Aamir felt the entire energy Ramu wanted in that first narration itself, which served as a very good cue for him.
Choosing authentic costumes for Munna
He further explained that he wanted to wear clothes that had already been used, rather than buying new ones and trying to make them look worn out, which he doesn’t like. Since his character is a tapori, he picked up clothes directly from people. Whenever he saw someone wearing jeans on the street, he would stop the car and ask if he could buy them. If the clothes fit, he kept them; if not, at least he knew what he was looking for. He admitted it was a risk, but most people were quite obliging.
Recent work: ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ and ‘Coolie’ cameo
On the work front, Aamir’s latest work includes the sports comedy-drama ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, directed by RS Prasanna. The film is seen as a follow-up to his 2007 movie ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and stars Genelia D’Souza along with new actors like Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, and Samvit Desai. He also made a small appearance in the action movie ‘Coolie’, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Coolie features popular actors like Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, and Pooja Hegde in a special role.
