Valentine’s Day in Kolkata often follows a familiar script – a café table, a prix fixe menu, maybe a late-night drive. But this year, couples are stepping off the predictable route and choosing experiences over reservations. From intellectually charged afternoons inside art galleries to high-energy activities like kayaking, cycling and trampoline parks, the city is offering ways to celebrate love that feel less routine and more memorable. If you wish to experience shared moments and enjoy some intentional time together this V-Day, turn it into the perfect excuse to try somethingdifferent.

The joy of active dates
Not every couple wants a sit-down Valentine’s – some prefer active dates, from coffee runs and cycling to night markets.
“It has to be a coffee run, because we’re getting fit while grabbing a coffee later on!,” laughs businessman Sanglab Bose, adding “We’d also explore night markets together. Outdoor dates always have an edge. They’re fun, boost adrenaline, and create unforgettable memories.”
For fashion designer and stylist Rakshika Jaisingh, cycling tops the list. “He loves cycling, and I enjoy joining him, even if it means just riding along and cheering him on. It’s our way of spending time together without overplanning.” She adds that playful, slightly adventurous plans, be it kayaking or visiting theme parks, feel more exciting as a V-Day plan.

The hype of slow intellectual dates
There’s something intimate about walking through an art gallery with someone special – the shared silences or the way a single artwork sparks unexpected conversation. “While viewing art all by yourself can be truly enjoyable, the beauty of visiting a gallery with a partner, or a date, especially on this special day, is the wonderful conversation that ensues. What better way to meet and get to know people than to debate and discuss art together and that is what we see at our art spaces,” says Sumona Chakravarty, VP, Museums, DAG.
Unlike cafés, which offer comfort and familiarity, galleries nudge couples out of routine and into curiosity and reflection. “I’d choose slow, relaxed dates over anything. My partner and I prefer to slow down and take it easy with our plans so that we can spend quality time together,” says Karan Mirik Sircar, a marketing specialist, while Shreya Ganguly, an engineer, adds, “Art galleries are more my thing than his, but the best part is he dives into art just to spend more time with me.”
Some couples take this offline, mindful approach beyond galleries. “We love small, thoughtful activities – flower picking, colour-coded photography, or hours at a bookstore,” says Akriti Jain, college student. “It’s more about sharing our interests,” she adds.
