Kolkata exhibition reimagines Charlie Chaplin as the eternal common man
An exhibition by artist Shuvaprasanna at the Kolkata Centre for Creativity turns the spotlight on Charlie Chaplin, revisiting the cultural legacy of the silent film icon through a painter’s lens. Titled A Genius & the Common Man, the exhibition reflects on Chaplin’s enduring relevance as an artist who bridged humour and social critique with rare sensitivity.
The works trace Chaplin’s journey from his impoverished childhood in London to becoming one of the most recognisable faces of world cinema. Shuvaprasanna focuses on Chaplin’s expressive face, body language and understated emotions—elements that made his silent performances universally relatable. Using acrylic liquid colour, the artist experiments with texture and form to convey layers of joy, satire and quiet defiance that defined Chaplin’s screen presence.
Rather than presenting Chaplin as a distant icon, the exhibition positions him as a figure deeply connected to everyday struggles. His critique of power, inequality and fascism finds subtle echoes in the artworks, underscoring why his narratives continue to resonate decades later.
The exhibition opens on January 2, at the Kolkata Centre for Creativity. It remains on view till January 22, offering visitors an opportunity to engage with Chaplin’s legacy through contemporary artistic interpretation.
