Bengaluru finds its groove in sober, sunlit picnic raves
Bengaluru’s rave scene has moved outdoors. Forget the dark clubs; these new events are sober gatherings with a picnic feel. Music plays, but under an open, sunlit sky, offering people a fresh way to gather and connect, Saloni Shah of Kaunversations and Evanshi Jhaveri of The Window Seat, who host picnic raves in the city, tell us. “It is refreshing to start your day with music, sunshine, and a clear head. The energy is different, more open, and you feel like you have the whole day ahead of you,” says Evanshi.
‘PEOPLE ARE GENUINELY INTERESTED IN HAVING SOBER EXPERIENCES’
A new era of conscious socialising is dawning, believes Saloni. She shares, “Today, people have started questioning what fun means to them. There is a quiet shift happening — a growing curiosity about mindful ways of socialising. We’re all becoming a little more aware of our mental health, our energy, and how we feel after certain kinds of experiences. The old tradition of needing alcohol to loosen up or to connect — it’s slowly fading. People, especially the younger generation, are realising that they can laugh, dance and build real connections without needing a drink in their hand.”
DAYTIME PARTIES ARE THE NEW COOL
Anurag Pandey, 29, a start-up founder in Bengaluru, doesn’t consider himself a morning person, but a picnic rave at dawn piqued his interest. “A lot of us are done with the usual nightlife plans — loud clubs, the same drinks, the same crowd. Something is refreshing about a daytime event: you get the music, the sun, and you leave feeling energised. It also feels way less intimidating to meet people,” he says.
THE MEANING OF FUN HAS CHANGED
For Hrithik Raj, a cloud engineer and surfer in Bengaluru, fun meant loud clubs, drinks, and staying out late. “But now, picnic raves have changed the meaning of fun for me. Just good music, the sun, and people who are genuinely present can give you that same high that you get from regular partying — maybe even a better one,” he shares. Diksha Sharma, content creator and marketer in Bengaluru, has always loved her quiet picnics with a book, mat and some solitude. “Meeting new people without the crutch of alcohol has always been my thing. When I first heard about a picnic rave, it sounded so novel. It felt naturally fun with the music, playful missions, dance and the open space,” she says.
'THE IDEA WAS TO GIVE PEOPLE A WAY TO REDISCOVER CHILD-LIKE JOY'“We wanted people to feel what it’s like to play again, to try new things and to feel light. It was an invitation to connect, to play without an agenda. Each guest got a boarding pass with a small mission: talk to someone new, start a playful activity, something simple to break the ice. From an art-and-craft station, to a ‘Back to Bachpan’ corner filled with nostalgic games like skipping ropes and stackers. The whole idea was to give people a way to rediscover those simple, childlike joys,” says Saloni.
'BENGALURU IS THE KINDEST CITY FOR COMMUNITY EXPERIENCES'Saloni, who has recently moved to Bengaluru from Ahmedabad, has found the city extremely kind towards new communities. “It is no surprise that Bengaluru is one of the best cities for community experiences because people here understand what community means. People are always excited to try something different and new, even if it’s unfamiliar. They are actively looking for smaller, meaningful spaces to connect, and that’s what makes the city feel so alive,” she says.
WHAT IS A PICNIC RAVE?
A picnic rave is a daytime gathering with the vibe of a picnic and the energy of a nightclub. Unlike traditional late-night parties, picnic raves are usually held in open spaces with sober experiences, curated music, activities, food and genuine interaction.‘PEOPLE ARE GENUINELY INTERESTED IN HAVING SOBER EXPERIENCES’
