New, Academy Award-winning cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw shared on ‘CBS Mornings’ that Coogler wanted something simple; something quick, gritty, and familiar, but still satisfying. All through filming, call sheets, emails, and set chatter, Sinners became “Grilled Cheese.”




“Kind of like down and dirty, something you can make quickly but that tastes really good,” Arkapaw said.

Even if word got out, nobody would guess it was the most anticipated movie of the year. The ruse worked. Coogler’s team kept the movie’s plot, including its wild take on vampires, completely under wraps until they were ready to reveal it.

“That was [Ryan’s] first iteration of the concept of how we were going to do this film,” the 46-year-old continued. “Something that can be quick and fast and gritty.”

In the end, Sinners wasn’t just another project: it was a cinematic feast. Arkapaw joked that the film grew from a simple snack to a “Michelin 12-course.” The code name stuck around as a reminder of the crew’s playful spirit and the director’s original vision: make something fast, raw, and unforgettable.
