‘Harano Sur is a tribute to my guru, Krishna Ganguly Dasgupta’
Nandini Chakraborty, the daughter of renowned cinematographer Ramananda Sengupta, has started work on directing a documentary. Titled Harano Sur, this documentary will be a tribute to the late classical singer Krishna Ganguly Dasgupta.
Born on December 29, 1937, in Hooghly district’s Janai, Krishna was a disciple of Ustad Amir Khan. Incidentally, Nandini had started taking vocal lessons from Krishna during her childhood. “That was in 1977. She used to stay in our locality. So, as a child, I used to learn from her. Later on, when I shifted back to this locality and started living in my father’s house, I again went back to her. We had a lovely time together.” Nandini said.
Over the years, her bond with her guru strengthened. Not just music, Nandini also heard many stories about how Krishna had done playback for songs composed by Pt Gnan Prakash Ghosh. Talking about her guru, Nandini mentioned how she had done playback for films like Asampta, Ektara, Rajlakshmi O Srikanta, Bhranti, Bipasha and Nader Nimai. “She had performed at various music conferences too. A versatile singer, my guru was known for her khayal, thumri, bhajan as well as Bengali modern songs. She had a particular style of performance that made her recitals unique. Not just that, she also performed regularly at Akashbani and Doordarshan. Even the Mahalaya programme had featured her,” Nandini said.
Sadly enough, few remembered her contribution to Indian classical music. “Once in 2010, she had rued how people had forgotten about her work. In 2013, she passed away,” Nandini added.
Work on the documentary is expected to be over by January next year. “The documentary is a small tribute to my guru,” Nandini signed off.
