Folk and playback singer Kalpana Patowary is set to introduce a first-of-its-kind live concert format titled Folk Ecstasy, premiering in Mumbai. Designed as a continuous, immersive 90-minute performance, the program treats Indian folk traditions as living sonic archives rather than isolated heritage pieces. The concept-driven performance brings together tribal and regional folk traditions from Assam and Bhojpuri-speaking regions, spanning seven Indian dialects. Rooted in field research and lived community experiences, the work places raw folk vocals in dialogue with contemporary jazz-influenced arrangements, preserving cultural integrity while reshaping form for present-day audiences.Folk Ecstasy pays tribute to cultural icons Bhupen Hazarika and Bhikhari Thakur, foregrounding women’s songs, ritual practices, migration narratives, and collective memory. After its Mumbai debut, the production will travel to cities including Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh.Beyond folk, Patowary is also widely known for popular film songs such as Gandi Baat (R… Rajkumar), Ore Kaharo (Begum Jaan), Ek Uncha Lamba Kad (Welcome), Aila Re Aila (Khatta Meetha), and the Bengali hit Tui Amar Coca Cola.
