A regrouping and consolidation of forces within the Congress is on the cards with former MLA Peter Alphonse and some other Tamil Maanila Congress members set to return to the new avatar of the grand old party ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
TNCC has extended an invite to the media to attend the homecoming function for Alphonse at Satyamurthy Bhavan, the state party headquarters, on Wednesday. Reiterating that he quit the TMC due to differences with the party leaders over their decision to align with the DMDK-PWF front, Alphonse told TOI, "I convinced myself that the best course of action for my political journey is to rejoin the Congress led by Sonia Gandhi. Others who are also on the same wavelength can also come back to the Congress."
However, it is understood that former Union minister S R Balasubramanian who was with Alphonse, regarded as one of the loyalists of Vasan's father G K Moopanar, has not made up his mind to quit TMC and rejoin the Congress.
Alphonse, a three-time MLA, pointed out that even when Moopanar floated TMC in Tamil Nadu, the latter had maintained that Sonia Gandhi was his national leader. Alphonse said he was not seeking a ticket for the elections and would not contest even if he was offered a seat as he believed that seniors should make way for youth leaders.
