Eastern Michigan University expands EMU Advantage program to help students and parents repay loans across 16 majors
Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is helping students reduce the stress of paying back college loans through its EMU Advantage program. The initiative provides assistance to graduates in repaying federal and private student loans, as well as federal parent loans, especially for those earning under $50,000 per year.
Originally available only for education majors, EMU has recently expanded the program to include 16 other majors, aiming to support a broader group of students in managing their college debt, AP News reported.
The university first launched EMU Advantage in 2024, after delays in the federal student aid system caused uncertainty for students and universities, AP News reported. Currently, about 160 students are enrolled in the program.

Encouraging students to follow their passions
Katie Condon, EMU’s vice president of enrollment management, told AP News, “My goal with this program is to encourage students to pursue a passion without necessarily being as concerned about (the) paycheck.” The program is designed to help students focus on their career interests rather than immediate earnings. How the program works
Under EMU Advantage, graduates receive financial help if their annual income is below $50,000. As their earnings increase, the amount of loan repayment assistance gradually decreases. Parents who have taken federal loans for their child’s education can also benefit from the program. The university first launched EMU Advantage in 2024, after delays in the federal student aid system caused uncertainty for students and universities, AP News reported. The impact of college degrees
College graduates generally earn higher salaries than those without degrees. In Michigan, the median annual wage for a high school graduate five years after finishing school is $33,100, while a bachelor’s degree holder earns around $66,600, AP News noted. Despite the long-term financial benefits, the rising cost of college and the burden of loans still discourage some students from pursuing higher education.Student perspective
William Kilgore, a first-year student from Novi majoring in secondary education English, has not yet taken loans but plans to later. He described the loan assistance program as a “big stress reliever,” especially considering teachers’ starting salaries. According to a report from the Education Policy Innovation Collaborative at Michigan State University, the starting teacher salary in Michigan is $41,645.Reducing financial stress for students
Programs like EMU Advantage aim to make college more accessible by reducing financial anxiety. As more majors are included, the program is expected to benefit a larger number of students and families, reflecting a growing effort by universities to ease student debt pressures and encourage students to pursue meaningful careers, AP News reported.Ready to navigate global policies?
