China’s new hybrid-powered unmanned transport aircraft CH YH-1000S completed its first flight on Sunday, marking a major development in its drone programme, State broadcaster CCTV said.
CCTV described it as the world’s first hybrid-powered unmanned transport aircraft. The drone uses a hybrid power system developed with a new energy vehicle company. This system combines a gas-powered engine and an electric motor, allowing it to operate using one or both sources. According to reports, the hybrid system improves performance by reducing take-off and landing distance while increasing payload capacity and range.
The CH YH-1000S is an upgraded version of the earlier CH YH-1000 model, which used a conventional power system. Chinese state media said it can carry up to 1,200 kg of cargo, has a range of 1,500 km, and can operate for more than 10 hours. It is also capable of taking off and landing in difficult terrain.
Chinese authorities said the new drone could be used for civilian purposes such as cargo transport, emergency rescue, disaster relief, maritime surveillance, and weather monitoring.
The aircraft is part of the CH drone series and have been exported to more than 10 countries.
However, there are also possible military uses. Lyle Goldstein, director of the Asia programme at Defence Priorities, said such drones could help supply elite troops during military operations, including in a possible conflict involving Taiwan. He said supplying frontline forces is often difficult, and heavy transport drones could help deliver ammunition and supplies, reported South China Morning Post.
