Visakhapatnam: Five students, including three engineering students, a commerce student and an ITI student, were taken into police custody for stealing goats in Padmanabham mandal, which is on the outskirts of Port City on Friday. Two other persons were also arrested.
The accused were identified as Ganta Gautam and Y Bheema Raju alias Bhadri of Raghu Engineering College and B Sunny Krishna Mohan of Avanti Engineering College of Tagarapuvalasa, besides Ch Bhargav of Gowri Degree College, ITI student K Sai Kumar, an auto driver Behera Ramesh and receiver Sheik Abdullah.
Each goat reportedly fetched them Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000. A farmer had lodged a complaint with Padmanabhan police that his five goats were missing since December 6. The farmer and the cops visited the nearby shandies (weekly markets) and found the goats at Kasipatnam shandy.
According to SI Rachakonda Malleswara Rao of Padmanabham Crime Wing, the students supplied the goats to Sheik Abdullah, who purchased the goats from the students and took the goats to the shandy. “We have been receiving complaints about goats missing for the past two months. Around 20 goats went missing. We arrested all the accused, including students, involved in the theft case. The students admitted that they committed the crime as the pocket money given by their parents was not sufficient to meet their needs,” the SI said. Padmanabham cops registered a case under Section 329 of IPC.
