Tirupati: The upland Udayagiri assembly constituency in Nellore district, which has perennially faced water crisis coupled with fluoride problems, is set to get an assured share of Somasila waters soon. The state govt has sanctioned ₹37 crore for the restoration and diversion of Somasila waters to Pathuru Cheruvu near Vinjamuru and store 0.3 TMC ft waters to meet the drinking water needs of the people of Udayagiri constituency. The development comes in the immediate aftermath of chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu's recent visit to the constituency.
Udayagiri assembly constituency has been a classic case of neglect of elected representatives for nearly four decades now, given the fact that not a single reservoir was built in the constituency in the last 40 years. "Even though Somasila pipelines travel along the constituency for 22 odd kilometres, we cannot draw even a single drop of water to mitigate the drinking water woes of the people here. As such, the fluoride problem plaguing the constituency for many decades has remained unaddressed," local TDP legislator Kakarla Suresh lamented.
The Pathuru Cheruvu at Vinjamuru, which is spread across an extent of 280 acres, was recently restored, he said. "We even established a children's park nearby. When the CM visited Vinjamuru tank upon our request and we explained the disturbing drinking water scenario in Udayagiri constituency, he immediately assured to address the issue. Following his instructions, ₹37 crore was allocated towards restoration and diversion of Somasila waters to Vinjamuru tank, which will mitigate the drinking water needs of 40,000 people in the constituency," he added.
The govt has also sanctioned an additional ₹8.5 crore for the restoration of Krakaturu waterbody. In addition, funds of ₹30 crore have been sanctioned for Udayagiri under the RWS and RRR schemes to provide safe drinking water across the constituency, the MLA informed.
