Investment boom may offer new roadmap for Andhra University
Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh, particularly Visakhapatnam, is witnessing a series of major investment announcements across sectors. These include data centres, IT development hubs, semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, hospitality, steel, green hydrogen, tourism, aviation, and port-led logistics. With the state government actively positioning Visakhapatnam as a future technology and industrial hub, experts say this evolving landscape presents a significant opportunity for Andhra University to align its academic and research priorities with emerging sectors. In recent months, global technology firms such as Google, Reliance, Sify Technologies, Accenture, Cognizant, Tata Consultancy Services, IBM, and Capgemini have announced projects or have been invited to establish large IT campuses, data centres, and global capability centres in the region. Industry observers say such investments could significantly transform Visakhapatnam into a vibrant knowledge and technology ecosystem over the next decade. As Andhra University approaches its centenary in April, many believe the milestone presents a timely opportunity for the institution to innovate and reposition itself. Strengthening partnerships with industry, expanding collaborative research, and introducing programmes in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum computing, semiconductor technologies, and digital infrastructure could help the university remain relevant to the rapidly evolving economic landscape.
The state government is also planning to transform Visakhapatnam into the largest data centre hub in the country, targeting a combined capacity of around six gigawatts. Announcements for nearly 3 GW have already been made. The 6 GW proposal is supported by plans for subsea cable landing stations along the coast. This would further enhance global digital connectivity and Vizag's appeal for large-scale data infrastructure investments. Similarly, the NITI Aayog-prepared Visakhapatnam economic region plan has proposed the development of full-fledged IT hubs in areas such as Kapuluppada, Madhurawada, and Anandapuram. These emerging technology corridors are expected to attract significant investments in IT services, electronics manufacturing, and digital infrastructure. Experts note that these developments could provide an opportunity for Andhra University to design forward-looking academic programmes, create specialised research centres, and establish stronger partnerships with industries setting up in the region. Speaking to TOI, Andhra University vice-chancellor Prof G P Rajasekhar said the university has increased its focus on new-age programmes. "Taking advantage of the National Quantum Mission, the university recently introduced a BTech programme in quantum computing. An advisory board has been constituted for the programme, having experts from Tata Consultancy Services, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, and alumni as members. With the support of this committee, we are planning to establish a quantum computing laboratory. Meanwhile, an expert teaching pool from industry is also being identified for different programmes," said the VC. He added that curriculum revision committees are being constituted to update undergraduate and postgraduate courses with a stronger focus on skills, innovation, and emerging technologies. "At the first-year level, students will be given hands-on exposure through ‘do-it-yourself' laboratories that will allow them to experiment with different technologies. Wherever funding opportunities are available, we are applying for them. Seven departments have applied for department of science and technology FIST funding. Similarly, six research proposals have been submitted under the quantum computing mission, including one for an undergraduate quantum computing laboratory," Prof Rajasekhar said. The VC added that alumni have also come forward to support the establishment of a semiconductor laboratory. "In this way, Andhra University is planning several innovations to align itself with emerging technological developments," said Prof Rajasekhar.
