Vijayawada: Amid the ongoing IPL season, Andhra Pradesh Police have announced a statewide crackdown on online betting and gambling, declaring zero tolerance for violations.
Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta held a high-level review with district SPs and ordered intensified enforcement against illegal betting networks. The move follows a surge in online gambling typically seen during major cricket tournaments.
Police units across the state have stepped up operations, targeting both physical and digital platforms. Clubs, lodges, and establishments found facilitating gambling will be shut down, while illegal dens will be raided without exception.
Authorities are tracking websites and mobile apps linked to betting, working with agencies to block them. Financial trails are also under scrutiny, with several bank accounts already facing freezing action.
The DGP directed that cases be booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, treating betting offences as organised crime. Strict action is being taken against bookies, agents, and individuals promoting gambling.
Repeat offenders may face preventive detention and externment, while properties tied to illegal betting could be attached under law.
Special drives are underway across districts, including surprise checks at hotels and public places. Police teams are gathering grassroots intelligence to dismantle networks.
Monitoring of social media has been intensified to curb promotion of gambling apps. Awareness campaigns are also being conducted, particularly targeting youth, on the legal and financial risks of betting.
