Modernisation of Gola pump canal to boost irrigation in Gorakhpur’s southern belt
Gorakhpur: Farmers in the southern region of Gorakhpur are set to receive improved and uninterrupted irrigation facilities as the Yogi govt accelerates modernisation of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Gola Pump Canal project.
Officials said nearly two-thirds of the work under the Rs 22.29-crore project has already been completed. Constructed in 1957, the canal system is undergoing a major technological and infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving water supply efficiency and eliminating voltage-related interruptions affecting irrigation operations. As part of the modernisation, the capacity of the existing power substation is being upgraded from 33/3.3 KV to 33/11 KV. HT and LT transformers are also being strengthened to support better power supply for canal operations.
Officials said five old 60-cusec horizontal split casing Jyoti make pumps are being replaced with higher-capacity pumps. The existing 250 KW, 3.3 KV HT motors are also being upgraded to 250 KW, 11 KV motors. In addition, new mud pumps and dewatering pumps are being installed under the project.
Officials said the revamp will improve water discharge and ensure supply reaches the tail end of the canal network. The project is expected to directly benefit farmers in Gola and Bansgaon tehsils, where nearly 13,000 hectares of farmland depend on the canal for irrigation.
According to executive engineer Vishwanath Shukla of irrigation department, the project has achieved 68% physical progress and is targeted for completion by March 2027.
