MSU mulls separate yoga, auyurveda depts

Vadodara: MS University is mulling a separate department of ayurveda and yoga at the campus. A proposal for starting new departments which offers courses in both ayurveda and yoga has been submitted by syndicate member Jignesh Soni.

The university’s syndicate members will decide over the proposal during their meeting on Thursday. Talking to TOI, Soni said that he has moved the proposal as both ayurveda and yoga are in high-demand.

“There are several private universities which too have started offering courses in ayurveda. If all syndicate members agree, the academics and the logistics to set up the department can be worked out,” he said.

“Once, the proposal gets in principle approval, we will approach the state government for the required permissions,” he added. The university is also trying to revive the Sheth Ujamsinh Pitambaras Ayurvedic Research Unit (SUPARU) – located in Baroda Medical College.

“While our committee is working hard to revive SUPARU, we still wish there is a separate department which can also conduct teaching of ayurveda for the benefit of all students,” said Soni, who is co-convener of the committee appointed by MSU for reviving SUPARU.
