Trichy: TVK cadres and functionaries erupted in joy around Sunday noon after party president Vijay confirmed his candidature in Trichy East besides Perambur for the assembly election. Fans and cadres, who were uncertain for weeks about their leader's choice of constituency, burst crackers across the city as the announcement came.
While Vijay will contest in Trichy East, that has a strong minority voters base, former AIADMK minister Ku Pa Krishnan, who recently joined TVK, will contest in Lalgudi. Seen as the mutharaiyar community face of the party, Krishnan is expected to lead the central zone's activities of TVK.
In Thiruverumbur, another new entrant, Navalpattu Viji, who was earlier with DMK, has been given an opportunity to compete with minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi. Former AIADMK minister N Subramanian is contesting from Gandarvakottai (reserved) in Pudukottai district, a seat he won in 2011. In Karur, where a stampede killed 41 people during Vijay's campaign last year, V P Mathiazhagan, Karur West district president, has been named TVK candidate.
He was arrested and jailed briefly in connection with the tragedy.
G Ramamoorthy and S Ramesh have been named TVK candidates for Trichy West and Srirangam respectively. Ramesh is a state functionary of the party's media wing. With the party awarding seats to newcomers from both DMK and AIADMK, there is discontent among a section of TVK functionaries who have been working hard for months.
