Students sensitised on moringa-based value addition
Trichy: St Joseph's College in Trichy on Friday organised a moringa-based value-added products training programme for college students at Nagamangalam village under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan scheme, a programme managed by the Union ministry of education to link higher educational institutions with rural communities. The training aimed to sensitise college students to consume value-added products from moringa trees to improve their wellness and produce healthy food products from moringa.Organised by the extension department (shepherd), college students underwent hands-on activities to produce moringa leaf powder and moringa soup powder. Preparatory methods for various value-added products, including moringa oil, moringa soap, moringa seed powder, moringa thokku, and moringa tea, were explained. Additionally, faculty from the botany department explained the nutritive values of moringa leaves, flowers, and gums, enhancing students' understanding of potential benefits and applications. Organisers said that the practical experience, including a tour of the herbal garden, equipped students with skills and exposure to engage in entrepreneurial ventures to produce and market value-added products from moringa.
