National policy needed on prohibition and drug abuse: Thirumavalavan

Trichy: VCK chief and Chidambaram MP Thol Thirumavalavan on Sunday said that a nationwide policy is essential to enforce alcohol prohibition and prevent drug abuse. He said that all parties including the DMK and AIADMK should join hands with social responsibility beyond the dynamics of electoral politics to prevent the loss of human resources due to alcohol and drugs.Speaking to reporters at the Trichy airport, on his way to Tiruvarur for a party meeting, Thirumavalavan asserted that VCK continues to be in the DMK alliance, and that the party's invitation to AIADMK to participate in VCK's conference for alcohol prohibition, is being politically twisted. "There is a perception that only state govts are responsible in enforcing total prohibition and abolishing drug abuse, but the Union govt too has responsibilities. The Indian Constitution provides an opportunity for a national level policy on alcohol prohibition. During the second and third five years plans of Congress govt, a committee headed by Shriman Narayan has even suggested legislation on prohibition," the VCK chief said. Pitching for a united voice from all political parties for the VCK's conference against alcoholism, Thirumavalavan said that all parties must show social responsibility in closing liquor outlets and to prevent smuggling of drugs. "So many women have become widows due to liquor. It is a national loss, our human resources are being wasted. We are talking only about Kallakurichi and Marakkanam, but such challenges are faced across the country," Thirumavalavan added. Reacting to a question on PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss's remark that VCK's fight against alcohol is in a kindergarten stage while PMK is in PhD stage for total alcohol prohibition, Thirumavalavan said, "It doesn't matter if we are in LKG.
