Trichy: Railway Board has given a no-objection certificate (NOC) to cede railway land near G Corner junction in Trichy for the construction of an elevated rotary on Trichy-Chennai National Highway (NH) to decongest vehicular movement. The development came after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) sought around 32,415sqm of railway land to construct an elevated stretch to ensure safe access for the public and railway employees approaching the Ponmalai railway workshop.
The G Corner junction at Ponmalai was identified as a critical point where multiple roads intersect. Over time, the junction became an accident hotspot due to heavy vehicular movement and two-wheelers using the service road from the opposite direction. In Jan 2025, a joint inspection was conducted by Trichy MP Durai Vaiko. Based on the report, Indian Railways granted the NOC for a four-lane ramp. Railways said the project is planned entirely on railway land, with no requirement for acquisition of private land.
"More than 20 official meetings have been conducted with NHAI and the railway department since Jan 2025 in this regard. I would like to thank Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the NOC. Further, we will discuss with NHAI and railway officials to expedite construction work," Durai Vaiko told TOI.
"We sought a solution for the issue for 16 years. The development is a big relief and should be capitalised to prevent accidents at G Corner," H Ghouse Baig, a retired railway employee, said.
The project will be taken up at Rs 60 crore on eight acres of land.
