TRICHY: The Trichy corporation during the monthly council meeting on Tuesday informed that stray cattle impounding centres will be opened in all zones, amid opposition from a section of councillors against the enforcement. At present, only one safe shelter is available across the city at Konakkarai in zone V, to accommodate the seized cattle. Four more centres will be opened in the other zones to intensify and sustain the drive to prevent accidents due to stray cattle.

Expressing his opposition, councillor of ward 60, Khajamalai Vijay charged a contractor entrusted to catch stray cattle, of injuring a cow. Another councillor, R Muthukumar representing ward 10 expressed dissatisfaction over the drive. However, mayor Mu Anbalagan intervened and said that the contractor will be punished if any mistake was committed. “We cannot stop the drive. Making roads safe is the priority. Four more centres will be opened to intensify the drive,” the mayor said.

Another section of councillors said that the drive was appreciated by 90% of the residents. “Corporation’s property will be utilised to shelter 50 cattle at a time in each of the four centres,” the mayor said. Meanwhile, CPM councillor S Suresh brought a bottle of drinking water alleging that Senthaneerpuram residents are getting substandard quality of water in their pipelines. The officials assured to inspect the area.

CPI councillor K Suresh demanded the local body to clarify whether the appointment of family members of the deceased corporation staff on compassionate grounds would continue or not.

Earlier, AIADMK councillors alleged that the corporation is ignoring their wards in sanctioning new road projects. A section of DMK councillors responded that AIADMK has no moral right to comment on the city’s development projects. Following the altercation, three AIADMK councillors walked out. Later, the mayor termed the allegation as baseless and recalled his inspection of development work in the wards represented by AIADMK councillors.
