TRICHY: A 37-year-old AIADMK functionary in Thanjavur district committed suicide on Sunday night by immolating self in frustration over the party’s internal conflicts and the electoral defeat in the recent assembly election. Appealing for the cadres and functionaries to stand united for the return of the ADMK general secretary Edppadi K Palaniswami led government, the functionary posted a video on Facebook before his death. Palaniswami on Monday paid floral tributes to the deceased and promised Rs 55 lakhs as financial support to his family. Police identified the deceased man as K Mahendiran, 37, hailed from Thiruppanandal in Thanjavur district. Mahendiran was running a flower shop and served as the joint secretary of the ADMK's Thanjavur East district traders’ wing. In a video posted on his Facebook profile before his death, Mahendiran, a loyalist of Edappadi Palaniswami was seen urging ADMK cadres to unite under the leadership of party’s general secretary. Sources said that Mahendiran was frustrated for the past few weeks due to the developments in the party with many functionaries leaving after ADMK’s defeat in the election. On Sunday night, around 9 pm, police said that Mahendiran poured petrol over him and committed suicide at Palur village near Thiruppanandal. In his Facebook post, Mahendiran requested the general secretary Palaniswami to pay homage to his body. On information, Palaniswami travelled to Thiruppanandal along with senior party leaders including OS Manian and S Kamaraj to pay homage and console the late functionary's family members. "I urge cadres and functionaries not to take such extreme steps. The party will take care of the late functionary's family. ADMK will bear the expense of his one-year-old daughter's education until she completes her higher education,” Palaniswami said. While the party’s headquarters announced Rs 35 lakhs as a solatium, Thanjavur district unit of ADMK has announced Rs 20 lakhs as compensation.
