India and Bangladesh have begun crucial Director General-level border talks in New Delhi, bringing renewed focus on illegal migration, cross-border crime and fencing gaps along the 4,096-km frontier. The BSF-BGB meeting comes amid heightened political attention in India, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterating the government’s “detect, delete and deport” approach to illegal migration. In West Bengal, which shares over 2,200 km of the border, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari have often differed on border security and enforcement issues. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also flagged concerns over infiltration in the eastern border states. Around 860 km of the India-Bangladesh border remains unfenced, making it a key point of discussion as both sides review security coordination, infrastructure gaps and emerging threats such as drone intrusion and smuggling networks.
