Trichy: Six people including two children and a police constable were injured after a drunk man driving a car rammed an autorickshaw, a couple of two-wheelers and an eatery on Vayalur Road in Trichy on Sunday evening.
Police identified the accused as Kuberan Balaguru, 49, a resident of Vasan Nagar. Inebriated, Kuberan was driving his car from Puthur junction to Somarasampettai. While approaching the Jeyanthi grocery store on Vayalur Main Road, Kuberan rammed his car first against a two-wheeler approaching from the opposite direction. Then he rammed a passenger autorickshaw followed by another moped parked on the roadside and halted his car after hitting an eatery.
Police said Arun Kumar, 41, from Shanmuga Nagar, his wife A Mariammal, 35, and daughters A Thayani, 6, A Sivanya, 2, travelling in the autorickshaw and driver M Veeramani, 25, were injured in the collision. While Arun Kumar was admitted to a private hospital, other injured victims were admitted to MGMGH.
Police constable G Ragunathan from Woraiyur, who was first hit by the Kuberan's car, suffered a fracture in his leg. On noticing Kuberan was drunk, locals manhandled him. Police rushed to the spot and rescued him. They registered a case and seized Kuberan's car.
