Volcanic ash from Ethiopia disrupts flights to Kerala

T'puram: Some of the morning arrivals from the Middle East and Mumbai to Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi airports were delayed on Tuesday due to cancellations after ash from an Ethiopian volcano entered flight routes a day earlier.

While there were no cancellations on Tuesday at these two airports, some of the arrivals from Pune, Mumbai and Abu Dhabi at Thiruvananthapuram and arrivals from Bahrain, Ras Al Khaimah (UAE), Dubai and Mumbai at Kochi were delayed. This caused delays in departures also.


Sources said that the flight schedule disruptions caused by the volcanic ashes on Monday could be the reason for the delays. The delays may continue for a day as the ash entered Delhi on Tuesday morning, forcing the airlines to cancel flights from the national capital.

An airline official said that flights will be back to normal on Wednesday as the ashes moved out of Delhi by Tuesday evening. "It will be safe for passengers to check the flight status before proceeding to the airport," he added. Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi airports have not issued any advisories.

The volcanic ash from Ethiopia that swept across the Middle East and across the Arabian Sea disrupted flights between the Middle East and India on Monday.
