Residents dump garbage on road to protest poor services

SURAT: Residents of Puna on Wednesday threw garbage from their houses on the main road blocking the traffic in the area. They were protesting against lack of garbage pick up service in the area by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). The protest was led by Congress SMC councillor Vijay Panseria of ward 16.
Women folk of nearly eight housing societies including Ranujadham Society and Chitu Nagar had complained about irregularity in the door to door garbage collection over the past few days.The contractor was penalized by the civic body for careless attitude. However, still he continued to work in similar fashion.
Fed up of piling garbage at their places, about 500 women from Ranuja Dham, Radhaswami, Iswar Nagar 1&2, Chitu Nagar, Kailash Dham, Laxmi Park and Vikram Nagar society decided to block the road by dumping garbage on the road.
As the Varachha zone officials came to know about this, workers SMC rushed to the place and cleaned the entire road.
“We solved the problem in an hour and lifted all the garbage. We have requested the residents to provide details of how irregular the contractor was so that we can take action against him,” said a health official from Varachha zone.
Puna ward 16 councillor Vijay Panseria said, “Women of the area have threatened that this time the garbage was dumped on the road, but next time it would thrown into Varachha zone office.”
According to an official, the garbage dumped by the residents filled half of the garbage collection van.
