Kullu: The police in Kangra have registered a case against a woman for hurting religious sentiments. The action followed a video that had gone viral on social media on Tuesday.
The video purportedly showed a woman asking two Muslim traders from Kashmir to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’. The woman, identified as Sushma Devi, tells the Muslim men in the video not to enter Himachal or sell anything here.
The police took note of the video and registered an FIR at the Alampur police post in Kangra district for hurting religious sentiments.
On Wednesday, the accused woman released a video on social media apologising for her remarks, saying she was “sorry for her inadvertent comments”.
Known as a peaceful state, Himachal Pradesh has seen a rise in religious intolerance and its public display in recent months. There have been instances of Hindu mobs threatening and looting Muslim shopkeepers in places, including Paonta Sahib, Palampur and Kangra.
There have also been massive protests demanding removal of mosques in towns like Kullu, Mandi and Shimla by right wing Hindu organisations.
