Shillong: Over 33,000 kg of sugar was seized by the troops of BSF Meghalaya and the state police in a joint operation in South Garo Hills district along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh international border in the last two days.
“The sugar was intended for smuggling into Bangladesh,” a statement issued by the Meghalaya Frontier Headquarters of the
BSF here said on Monday.
“The operation led to the successful seizure of a large quantity of sugar, which had been stockpiled in an abandoned house near the Rongra bordering area,” it added.
In yet another operation, a mobile check post party of BSF intercepted a truck near Baghmara on Monday, which was suspected of carrying a large quantity of sugar meant for smuggling into Bangladesh.
“Upon being intercepted, the driver and co-driver fled the scene under the cover of darkness,” the BSF said, adding that the seized bags of sugar have been handed over to the local police post.
