Shillong: The Border Security Force (BSF) foiled an attempt to smuggle sugar, when troops from the 172 Battalion of BSF Meghalaya Frontier intercepted a vehicle loaded with sugar near the Lumshnong-Sonapur bordering area, BSF officials said on Thursday.“The intercepted vehicle was found to be loaded with a substantial quantity of sugar, intended to be smuggled into Bangladesh from the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. The driver of the seized vehicle was apprehended, as he failed to provide valid documents for the consignment of sugar. The apprehended individual and the seized items were handed over to the concerned police station for further legal action,” a spokesperson at the Meghalaya Frontier Headquarters of the BSF said.“In another operation, based on specific information, a BSF party of the 4th Battalion of BSF Meghalaya seized 14 buffaloes, which were concealed in a jungle area near the bordering village Rongtila of West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, with the intention of smuggling them into Bangladesh,” a BSF spokesperson informed, adding that the seized cattle were handed over to the concerned police station. “These successful operations underscore the BSF Meghalaya’s commitment to curb illegal activities along the borders and ensure safety and security of the region,” a BSF statement said. 4127 BSF personnel and 2572 CRPF personnel have opted for voluntary retirement in 2023. The reasons for voluntary retirement include personal and domestic reasons, health issues, and better career opportunities. The government has implemented measures to reduce the number of personnel seeking voluntary retirement, such as conducting cadre reviews, providing career progression benefits, and posting near the home town during the last two years of service. In addition to BSF and CRPF, personnel from Assam Rifles, CISF, and ITBP have also taken voluntary retirement in significant numbers.
