BRO to reduce carbon footprint in building roads

Shillong: The BRO is taking a significant step towards sustainability with a new research initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions during road construction. The Headquarters Research and Development Establishment (HQ R&D Estt), Shillong — a key research wing of BRO — has entered into a partnership with IIT-Delhi to study and reduce the carbon footprint in road infrastructure projects.Rajeev Dua, chief engineer of HQ R&D Estt, Shillong, announced on Saturday that the organization has signed an MoU with Hussain Kanchwala and Geetam Tiwari from IIT, Delhi.“The MoU is focused on developing strategies and tools to minimise the carbon emissions generated during the construction of roads across the country. The research is expected to span 24 months and will result in the development of a computer-based tool that will assist agencies in planning road construction with a reduced carbon footprint,” a defence release said.“Once finalized and approved by the Indian Roads Congress (IRC), this tool will be made available to various road construction agencies nationwide,” the release read.

BMC signs MoU with IIT-B for cement road quality checks

The BMC has engaged IIT-Bombay as a third-party auditor for cement-concrete road projects in Mumbai through an MoU. IIT-B will conduct unannounced visits, inspect sites, and provide feedback to ensure construction quality. The agreement was formalized by BMC's chief engineer and IIT-B's dean of research and development.

The Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samiti in Belthangady introduced a Rs 20 fine for wasting food during their one-day festival on Sept 7. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about food wastage and achieved a significant 40% reduction. Approximately 3,000 people attended the event, which included meals throughout the day.
