Ranchi: A cyber fraud was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) from West Bengal’s North 24 Pargana district on charges of cheating a Latehar-based businessman of Rs 2.07 crore through fake investment and trading apps, police said on Saturday.The accused, identified as Abhishek Bera (26), a resident of Muraguchha under the Ghola police station limits in North 24 Parganas, was arrested on Thursday and brought to Ranchi under transit remand. He was forwarded to jail under judicial custody on Friday. A laptop, two mobile phones, three sim cards and five debit cards have been seized from him, the CID stated.

The CID stated that acting on the basis of a complaint submitted by the victim, a case was registered at the Ranchi’s cyber police station on December 16 last year.The victim, in the FIR, alleged that he was added to a whatsapp group, ‘Digital Assets’, which proposed attractive trading offers. He was shown fake profit in the initial period of investment, which led him to transfer a sum of Rs 2.07 crore to multiple bank accounts.The bank account of accused Bera is also under scanner in a cyber fraud case of similar nature lodged in Uttar Pradesh, the CID added.The CID urged people to not click on links related to investment offers through whatsapp, telegram, and goggle adds, nor deposit money into bank accounts or UPI provided through whatsapp and telegram. Invest only through govt authorised applications and obtain all information related to it, it stated.Call 1930 immediately in case of cyber fraud or submit written complaints on cybercrime.gov.in or at the cyber police station, the CID further directed residents.
