Gumla: A 32-year-old man was trampled to death by an elephant in Ghagra block of the district on Friday. The deceased Anup Kumar Pandey was a part of a group of people from Burhu village which had gone to a nearby forest patch to see the elephant. The enraged jumbo ran towards the group. While others managed to flee, Pandey could not. The elephant killed him on the spot.
Sanni Aftab, local forest beat officer, said the elephant ventured close to Burhu forest from nearby Panso village around 6:30 am. “As we moved to verify the elephant presence, we were told it killed a man," he said.
"We have handed over Rs 25,000 as the advance compensation to the affected family. Rest Rs 3.75 lakh would be paid to it after completion of official formalities soon," he added. This is the third killing in 2026 after one each in Bharno and Sisai blocks in Gumla forest division.
