Ranchi: Ruling JMM central general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya on Sunday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent visit to the northeast and Manipur, in particular, terming it an election-oriented tour as many states in the region are going for the assembly polls next year.
Bhattacharya also criticised PM Modi for not visiting Manipur soon enough after the ethnic violence in the state started on May 2, 2023.
“The ethnic violence in Manipur, which can be termed as the biggest one of independent India, has already claimed the lives of around 960 people, and injured thousands. But it took the PM 29 months to cover the distance of 1,700 km between Delhi and Imphal. However, during that period, he has visited 44 countries across the globe, but did not get time to visit a state in his own country,” Bhattachrya claimed.
The JMM leader also said that Modi visited Manipur recently only because the state is going for the assembly polls soon.
“Many states in the northeast, including Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh are going for the polls in 2026 or 2027, and the PM visited the region only to gain benefits in the upcoming elections,” Bhattachrya said, appealing to the Centre to provide all possible assistance to the people of Manipur for their rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo countered JMM’s allegations by saying PM Modi has visited Manipur eight times in the past 11 years, unlike his predecessors. The NDA govt is very sensitive towards the northeast and determined to ensure the development of the seven sister states. After the violence broke out in Manipur, home minister Amit Shah visited the state within six hours,” Shahdeo added.
