Jharkhand Boosts Technical Education with AI & Emerging Tech Centres of Excellence
Ranchi: The department of higher and technical education proposed setting up Centres of Excellence (CoE) in the state to promote technical education, with a special focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. These centres will be established at BIT Sindri and at govt Engineering College (GEC) Palamu.
Principal secretary Rahul Purwar said, “The Centres of Excellence are aimed at increasing employability and improving placement outcomes by focusing on niche technologies and future skills.” He said the initiative would provide students with opportunities for technology-driven learning aligned with industry needs.
At BIT Sindri, four specialised Centres of Excellence were proposed across key future-oriented domains. The first CoE will focus on Extended, Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality (ER/AR/VR/MR) technologies and will include a basic XR training lab and an advanced XR training and research lab.
The second CoE will be dedicated to Drone and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and will comprise a drone simulation lab, a drone design and research and development lab, a drone fabrication and service lab, and a GIS, AI and data processing lab.
The third CoE at BIT Sindri will centre on electric vehicles and their components. It will house an electric powertrain and driveline systems lab, a battery technology and charging infrastructure lab, an EV digital twin and control simulation lab, and an AR/VR-based EV maintenance and safety training lab, while the fourth CoE will focus on data analytics, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, and will include a big data analytics Lab along with a natural language processing and computer vision lab.
Meanwhile, at govt Engineering College, Palamu, four Centres of Excellence were proposed in the areas of civil construction and town planning, sustainable and renewable energy technology, data analytics including artificial intelligence and machine learning, and robotics and automation.
Purwar said the proposed CoEs will significantly strengthen academic, research and development activities in the state. He added, “The centres will create structured opportunities for summer internships and long-term training programmes for students of polytechnic colleges across Jharkhand.”
He said, “The CoEs will ensure hands-on practical exposure to modern-day equipment and emerging technologies, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry requirements.”
