Jamshedpur: The Steel City police have busted a bike-lifting gang involving an entire family.
Bapi Samad (45), his wife Basanti (40), and their son Mithun (21) allegedly operate the gang. Explaining their modus operandi, the police said on the pretext of purchasing goods, the couple would go to the market on their bike. While returning, they would abandon their vehicle at the parking zone and came home on a stolen bike. It was the responsibility of Mithun to bring his father’s bike home from the market.
“The couple carried duplicate keys with them often to the market and they brought home the stolen bike whenever they succeeded in unlocking the parked vehicle,” said deputy SP (Patamda range) Bachan Deo Kujur.
After stealing the vehicle, Mithun’s friend and accomplice Sukhdev Lohara (22) used to sell off the vehicle in Odisha and Bengal on forged documents. Other members of the gang aided Lohara in the process. The police recovered five stolen bikes from the gang on Thursday and investigation is underway to recover more vehicles as eight more accomplices of the gang are to be apprehended.
