RANCHI: State police are set to get its first cyber defence research centre (CDRC) in the next one month that will help protect the government websites from cyber attacks.
Last month, the state cabinet sanctioned the centre which would be working under special branch of police. Notification for the recruitment of six cyber security experts on contract basis will be issued in a day or two.
Cyber experts in CDRC will not only advise different government agencies in strengthening the cyber security of its website, but will also try to crack the security systems to check the vulnerabilities of such attacks.

As planned, the centre will be gradually developed so that in entire eastern India it can help other government agencies of neighbhouring states in protecting their data, website and other web-based electronic systems.
"Experts appointed on contractual basis will also formulate rules and regulations for cyber security in accordance with the IT Act next month. This rule and regulation will be sent to the government for enactment," said IG (special branch) S N Pradhan.
The central government has asked every state to notify its own rules and regulations for cyber security after amendment in IT Act. "Rules and regulations will be in accordance with the IT Act and will empower police and other investigating agency to check cyber crimes," said Pradhan.

There are no regulations to check rampant growth of cyber cafes and guidance to run cyber cafes which often result in misuse in Jharkhand, added Pradhan. "Through these rules and regulations to be enacted by the state, we can check the rampant growth and those who follow the norms will be given license to run such cafes."
He, however, made it clear that the CDRC work would be purely advisory and not investigative. "The investigative part will be done by police," said Pradhan.
Government website www.jharkhand.gov.in has often been hacked in the past. Recently, the website of the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) www.ranchimunicipalcorporation.com was also hacked and linked to porn websites causing enough embarrassment to the civic body.
